Study
Suggests Zinc Remedy Prevents Colds
Statistical
results of a retrospective analysis suggest that COLD-EEZE®,
an over-the-counter zinc cold remedy from The Quigley Corp.
is also an effective means of prevention. A company news release
stated that when taken daily, COLD-EEZE® (a 13.3-mg zinc
gluconate glycine lozenge) statistically decreased the number
of colds experienced per year, reducing the median from 1.5
to zero.
The study
also found that the use of COLD-EEZE® to treat the common
cold statistically reduced the use of antibiotics for respiratory
illnesses from 39.3% to 3% when COLD-EEZE® was administered
as a first-line treatment approach.
Additionally,
the study reinforced the findings of previous clinical trials
that concluded that COLD-EEZE® reduced the median duration
of a cold by 4 days, the company stated.
The findings
were the result of analyzing 3 years' worth of clinical data
at the Heritage School in Provo, Utah. The study comprised
more than 170,000 patient days in a student population of
317 adolescents ranging from 11 years to 17 years.
